History & Tradition
- Strained yogurt is one of the thousand-year-old traditions of Armenian cuisine.
- By straining yogurt (removing the whey), a thicker, creamier mass was obtained that lasted longer and was used in various dishes.
- Pomegranate seeds as a combination entered the tradition later.
- Pomegranate has been considered a symbol of fertility, abundance, and health since ancient times.
How It’s Served
- Strained yogurt with pomegranate seeds is usually served cold as a light dessert or snack.
- It is presented in small bowls or on plates: the thick yogurt is smoothed out, then generously topped with fresh pomegranate seeds (often in the center of the bowl or across the entire surface).
- Some add a little chopped nuts.
- It is served freshly prepared so that the pomegranate seeds do not lose their juiciness and freshness.
- Ideal for the winter family table, after a festive meal, or as a standalone light dish.
